Is Enhanced Landfill Mining the missing link to a Circular Economy v2.0?

The Detritus Journal published a special issue on resource recovery through Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM). In the editorial, the question is asked if Enhanced Landfill Mining is “the missing link to a Circular Economy 2.0?” The results of the H2020 MSCA ETN NEW-MINE project are presented in this issue. These and other findings will be debated during the fifth ELFM Symposium on February 6, 2020 in Leuven (Belgium) (cf. https://elfm.eu/).


Guest editors Lieven Machiels, Enrico Bernardo and Peter Tom Jones describe ‘Enhanced landfill Mining’ (ELFM) in the editorial of the Special Issue as “an out of the box approach to address the dark side of the circular economy vision.” More precisely, they question “how [we] can deal with the waste of the past, irrespective of the urgent need to avoid new waste creation and disposal in the future”. In this respect, they argue that “ELFM considers landfills as resource stock awaiting future mining in order to recover valuable resources in an integrated way.”

The H2020 MSCA ETN NEW-MINE project supported a special issue of the Detritus Journal on resource recovery through enhanced landfill mining. The NEW-MINE project aims “to develop innovative concepts, technologies and methods for integrated resource recovery and remediation of landfills containing Municipal Solid Waste. It investigates the full value chain: from landfill exploration to excavation, material separation, recovery and upcycling of landfilled materials and energy resources as well as the reclamation of land. Additionally, an integrated environmental, social and economic assessment framework is developed and applied on ELFM.”

Detritus?

The Detritus Journal is a multidisciplinary journal for waste resources and residues. It is an official journal of the International Waste Working Group (IWWG). The IWWG was conceived in 2002 and serves as a forum for the scientific and professional community to promote and disseminate new developments in the waste management industry. It was established as a think tank providing an intellectual platform to encourage and support integrated and sustainable waste management and promote practical scientific development in the field. All publications are open access.
