During a session at the Ecomondo – Green Technologies Expo – prof. Enrico Bernardo presented his research about the recovery of resources through enhanced landfill mining, part of the NEW-MINE project.
The event was organized from November 7-10, 2017 in Rimini (Italy) by the Interdepartmental Centers for Industrial Research on “Energy and Environment” of the University of Bologna, the Division of Chemistry of the Environment and Cultural Heritage of the Italian Chemistry Society, and supported by the Ecomondo Scientific Technical Committee.

It is an international event with an innovative format that brings together all sectors of the circular economy in a single platform: from material and energy recovery to sustainable development.
The priority commitments for the Green and Circular economy of the European Commission were the highlights of expo contents and events at Ecomondo. As a key message, Ecomondo emphasized the EU’s ambitious targets to achieve higher waste recycling rates and re-use: “According to the European Parliament’s Environment Committee’s ruling of January 2017, in the European Commission’s proposal on waste management, ambitious targets must be set to achieve waste recycling rates and 70% preparation for re-use by 2030 (80 % for packaging materials) and the limitation to 5% of waste destined for landfill. Greater efficiency in the exploitation of industrial waste is also needed. A fundamental role in the achievement of these difficult and demanding objectives will be carried out by applied research and industrial innovation. A significant boost to innovation will be provided by the tools and strategies of Industry 4.0 that will promote the integration between processes and systems as well as between companies and infrastructures, in line with the concept of “circular economy”. The possible benefits deriving from the implementation of these innovations, the factors supporting any industrial applications, the challenges and the aspects of success will be the issues on which companies, researchers, local authorities and other stakeholders will be called to confront themselves through oral presentations and poster.”
As one of the lectures, prof. Bernardo of the University of Padova presented his research about the ‘Recovery of resources through landfill mining’.
